When I heard Lil Wayne had planned to make a rock and roll album, I laughed. I mean to be honest we saw this dude grow up. From his days as a Hot Boy, he didn't look like the kind of kid that was busy playing guitar or listening to Iggy Pop. Instead he looked like the kind of kid that used to make fun of me for liking the Def tones, Rage Against the Machine or System of a Down.... Truthfully part of that was because I didn't look like the kind of kid that should like any of those artists. ...which is a sad idea but still very true. So it's ironic 10 years later to find out that Lil Wayne not only appreciates different genre's of music but he wants to and has made it as well.
Since Lil Wayne's jump to the mainstream we've been finding out more about him and it's
becoming apparent that in between selling crack and tarding kisses with Baby, he's grown into quite the nerd..... Going against the flow of what's popular and ultimately deciding it thanks in part to his status. Lil Wayne's choice to just do what he wants is effectively making it cool for everyone else to do the same. I love this and fully support it. Personally rock/rap combos are my favorite genre of music. When I used to play music my favorite shows were the shows where we had a live band backing us, and Wayne's abum follows that trail blazed by artists such as The Roots and NERD.
However none of that is why I laughed whne I heard Wayne was making a rock album. I laughed because I expected it to be gawd awful. I mean it's Lil Wayne...I expected him to fully rely on the auto tune and make absolutely no sense and he didn't let me down, but only half the time. The album he released entitled Rebirth is actually pretty good... Wayne sounds good, even on the tracks where he doesn't make sense or uses too much auto tune...But that's in part thanks to his support system, he's got Travis Barker on drums, some woman I've never heard singing backup and lot's of quality post production. I'm sure the raw sessions were pretty mind numbing but since we're not getting that it's fun just to enjoy the finished product...
My favorite song on the album is posted below for people that want a taste.
