There are a lot of shows I wish I paid attention to when I was younger.... Baywatch is not one of them, but the second season is Baywatch Nights is. Apparently it started off as a detective show spin off of the original Baywatch. There's an episode where Mitch HAD to dress in drag, but I feel like he joined the detective squad as an excuse, you be the judge:
Hasslehoff in drag secured the show a second season, but just barely.. so the writers decided to turn it into a Sci-Fi series in the second season to boost ratings. The results were amazing, but the lack luster first season , despite the casting of blues superstar Lou Rawls and did I mention Hasselehoff in drag ?, set the show up for a fall and it was canceled at the end of season two. Sad.
I know it’s redundant, but I feel like you need to also see the synopsis someone wrote on wikipedia for the show:
Synopsis
The original premise of the show was that, during a midlife crisis, Sgt. Garner Ellerbee, who was the resident police officer of Baywatch since the beginning of the series, decides to quit his job as a police officer and form a detective agency. Mitch Buchannon, his friend from Baywatch, joins to support him and they are in turn joined by a detective named Ryan McBride. Singer Lou Rawls, who starred in the first season, performed the series theme song, "After the Sun Goes Down".
During Season 2, facing slipping ratings which were never as good as the original series, the producers decided to switch to a science fiction format (inspired by the success of The X-Files). Garner Ellerbee left the series and was replaced by Diamont Teague, a paranormal expert. The new format did not help the series and it was promptly canceled after the second season. The character Donna Marko, played by Donna D'Errico (regular cast member for season 2 only) was carried over to the original Baywatch series afterward.
So my only question is this, With Baywatch Nights being canon enough to have one character jump ship to the main show upon it's demise, When the heck did Mitch sleep ? And don’t you think he’d talk about all the zombies, ghosts, and other worm infested bat dookie insane crap he fought at night while working during the day ? NOPE, he just about the weather and routes to work like everyone else, it’s just kinda weird. But rather than behaving as if Baywatch Nights is supposed to be taken seriously, I’ll just reflect on the awesomeness that should have been, by watching the creepy opening trailer of the second season... AND YOUR GOING TO JOIN ME... MWAHAHAHAHAHA!
